About UsMission StatementThrough a variety of approaches, Conflict and Common Ground promotes compassion, inquiry and dialogue as a catalyst for constructive growth and positive change. We provide information, education, and services that can empower members of the SJSU campus community to work through conflict in a non-violent manner and recognize the essential bonds that unite us humans. ServicesWe offer facilitated processes by which individuals or groups can come together to resolve conflict, deliberate contentious issues, or explore new ideas. We also offer workshops and trainings so that people can learn to use these processes in their own lives or within their own groups or organizations. While focusing initially on the mediation process as one approach, Conflict and Common Ground relies on other proven forms of collaborative communication such as public dialogue and appreciative inquiry. HistoryConflict and Common Ground opened its doors on November 1, 2004. The project came to fruition thanks to the efforts over two years of four key members of the campus community: Richard Keady, Comparative Religious Studies Coordinator; Dina Medina, Mediation Coordinator; Christina Sabee, Assistant Professor Communication Studies; and now-retired University Police Captain Shannon Maloney. This group has been working closely with Bea Herrick and Delorme McKee-Stovall of the Santa Clara County Office of Human Relations in establishing this center and getting an initial group of students and staff trained as our volunteer mediators. CCG is currently funded through a partnership between the Division of Student Affairs, the Office of the Provost and the Division of Administration and Finance. Additional Information |
