SAN JOSÉ, Calif., -- President Jon Whitmore, San José Councilmember Sam Liccardo and Santa Clara County Supervisor George Shirakawa will roll up their sleeves to join 1,500 volunteers from San José State, the city of San José, the San Jose Redevelopment Agency and surrounding neighborhoods at the third annual SJSU Day of Service from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 8.
"This will be our largest Day of Service, with more volunteers, sponsors and projects than ever before," President Jon Whitmore said. "We take great pride in this event, which unites everyone who lives and works in our area, and results in real improvements to this home we share."
Whitmore, Liccardo and Shirakawa will welcome all participants at 8:20 a.m. on SJSU's Tower Lawn. Volunteers will spend the rest of the morning and early afternoon working at 38 sites near campus, then return to Tower Lawn for a barbecue lunch and celebration. See below for a complete schedule and project roster.
Whitmore, Liccardo and Shirakawa will work with two teams beautifying a California Department of Transportation right of way and planting trees donated by Our City Forest at South Sixth and East Reed streets near Lowell Elementary School. The teams will also work with South University neighborhood leaders on beautifying parkstrips in the same area. Many more landscaping projects are planned, aided by 20 truck loads of compost and mulch donated by Z-Best.
Volunteers will also restore a mural at Spartan Market, a neighborhood shop at 351 E. William St., near South Eighth Street just south of the SJSU campus. The mural was painted in memory of Joshua Hernandez, a University of California, Berkeley, student who was shot and killed in 1995 as he walked with a friend to a nearby apartment.
Other projects include house painting, bridge beautification, and improvements to schools, libraries, trails and a youth center. Day of Service participants include SJSU sororities, fraternities and other student organizations as well as students, faculty and staff from academic and administrative departments campuswide. The SJSU volunteers will work in partnership with city of San José staff and over 100 community volunteers from 11 neighborhood associations.
The SJSU Division of Student Affairs works with dozens of sponsors and partnering organizations to organize the day. For a full list, please visit the Day of Service website.
